Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore general chatacteris tics of infertile women and their family conflicts in order to provide direction of nursing strateges to improve the quality of life of the infertile women. A total of 182 subjects were selected at a infertility clinic of a hospital located in Seoul, Korea. Data were collected from May, 2, to June, 21, 1997 by questionaire consisted of 21 items, of which 9 items were related to demographic aspects and 12 to infertility. The data were analyzed by using SPSS/PC computer program.
The results were follows
1. Mean age of the infertile women interviewed was 32.4 years old, and that of the spouces 34.8 years old. 30.2% of the women had 3-5 years of marital duration and 25.8% for 5-10 years. The main etiology of infertility was unexplained (23.1%), ovulation disturbance (18.1%), and complex causes(26.4%). 3.8% of the couples had sexual trouble. 83% lived in a nuclear family, while 17% lived in a large family.
2. When a women visited infertility clinic for the first time, 33.5% of them came herself which occupie the largest part of the case, and 23.6% by the persuassion of friends. 51.1% of the women discussed about pregnancy mainly with her husband. 13.7% of the women had conflict with their husband due to the infertility. 17.6% of the women had conflict with their husband¢¥s family, among which 81.3% was their mother-in-law.
3. There was significant differences in the conflict with husband according to the ages, educational le,,els, and occupation of the husband.
4. In the conflict with the husband¢¥s family, working women suffered more than housewives, and the conflict in a large family is much more than in a nuclear family.
The result of this study suggest that nurses have to provide more discrete nursing managements for the infertile women to be released from their family conflicts.
